Armed Man Gets Shot While Fleeing From Phoenix Police Officers

Phoenix, Arizona — On November 20, 2023, Phoenix Police contacted a man, identified as 24-year-old Jesse Magana after an officer almost struck Magana as he rode his bike midblock across Thomas Road. During this contact, the officer detained Magana by escorting him to the ground. While on the ground Magana did not follow commands. The officer saw a handgun in the Magana's waistband and ordered him not to move. Magana resisted and forced his way to his feet. The officer pushed Magana away to create distance and took cover behind her patrol car. Magana ran away west on Thomas Road. Multiple officers responded to the area and tracked Magana into a neighborhood north of Thomas Road and west of I-17. While running Magana reached toward his waistband, at which point one officer fired multiple rounds from his duty weapon hitting Magana at least once. Magana was arrested for aggravated assault on a police officer and other possible charges. Magana suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment. Magana was released from the hospital and booked on charges including aggravated assault and misconduct involving weapons by a prohibited possessor. No officers were injured during the incident.
