Maywood, California — On January 26, 2023, at 5:38 a.m., Operation Safe Streets Bureau detectives executed a search & arrest warrant at a residence in the 6100 block of Clarkson Avenue, Maywood. The detectives were serving the search warrant for a female adult who was wanted in connection with an assault with a deadly weapon where a handgun was used in the assault. Upon execution of the search and arrest warrant, detectives conducted “knock and notice” notifications and identified themselves as law enforcement officers to the occupants inside the residence. Two occupants were detained by detectives without incident.

While continuing to call out to additional occupants, a male, later identified as 70-year-old Miguel Lopez, was inside his residence holding a firearm. Detectives gave Lopez numerous commands to drop the firearm, but he refused. Lopez advanced towards detectives and pointed the firearm at them, at which time a deputy-involved shooting occurred. Two Detectives discharged their service weapons. Lopez sustained gunshot wounds to his torso. He was treated at the scene by Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics and pronounced dead at the scene. A loaded .357 caliber revolver was recovered at the scene. There were no other persons injured in the incident.
