Paramount, California — On January 30, 2025, at 12:15 a.m., a deputy assigned to Lakewood Station was parked in the parking lot of the Paramount Sheriff’s Sub-Station when he heard a loud, repetitive banging noise. The deputy drove north through the parking lot to investigate the noise and saw a male, later identified as 34-year-old Juan Alvarez, armed with a machete and walking toward him at a rapid pace. The deputy exited his vehicle and gave Alvarez repeated commands to get on the ground, but he did not comply.
Alvarez continued advancing toward the deputy while still armed with the machete, at which time a deputy-involved shooting occurred. Alvarez was struck by gunfire and fell to the ground. Once assisting deputy personnel arrived on scene, they made a tactical approach and rendered first aid until the arrival of Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel. Alvarez was pronounced deceased at the scene. No deputies or other persons were injured during the incident. A machete was recovered at the scene.
