Manhattan, NY — On Saturday, June 1, 2024, at approximately 5:30 p.m., Police Officer Anne Arcega was standing in front of the 23rd Precinct stationhouse, located at 164 East 102nd Street, Manhattan, when she was approached by a civilian witness who informed her that there was a person further down 102nd Street who was threatening people with a knife. Officer Arcega summoned Officer Gary Cabral and Sergeant Nestor Beaume for assistance, at which time the three officers walked east on 102nd Street toward 3rd Avenue. Once opposite 210 East 102nd Street, Officer Arcega, Officer Cabral, and Sergeant Beaume encountered a dispute between a suspect identified as 36-year-old Ndiouga Gaye and several other individuals. Gaye then began to chase another person while brandishing a knife in his right hand. Sergeant Beaume ordered Gaye to drop the knife, however Gaye refused to do so and began walking toward Officer Arcega. Officer Arcega deployed a Taser Conducted Energy Weapon at Gaye, however it was ineffective at stopping Gaye's aggression toward her. Gaye then swung the knife at Officer Arcega. As a result, Sergeant Beaume discharged one shot from his service firearm at Gaye. Gaye was struck by the gunfire and fell to the ground. Gaye was transported from the scene via ambulance to Mount Sinai Morningside Hospital where he was treated for his injuries. Gaye's knife was recovered at the scene of the incident during this investigation. For his actions, Gaye was arrested and charged with Attempted Aggravated Assault Upon a Police Officer, Attempted Assault in the First Degree, and Menacing a Police Officer.
