Suspect Shot by Officer After He Wounded Another Officer Who Was Trying to Disarm Him

West Haven, Connecticut — On December 1, 2023, at approximately 1:55 a.m., West Haven police officers were dispatched to 296 Terrace Avenue, Apartment C2, West Haven, Connecticut on a domestic violence complaint. At that location, the police spoke to the complainant who reported that 33-year-old Jovan Washington had attempted to strangle her and would not let her leave the apartment. Police went to a bedroom in the apartment and spoke to Jovan Washington, who was in bed. Officer Cody Bacon informed Washington that he was going to be taken into custody and asked him if he wanted to put on a pair of pants.
Washington got out of bed and was moving toward a closet when he suddenly turned and reached under the mattress for a gun. A struggle ensued during which Washington fired one shot striking Officer Bacon in the leg. Officer Alex Triscritti then fired multiple shots striking Washington. Officers on scene provided medical aid to Washington and requested Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to respond. EMS transported Washington to Yale New Haven Hospital (YNHH) where he was pronounced dead. The police transported Officer Bacon to YNHH for treatment for a gunshot wound to his upper leg.
